Read about: Robert F. Kennedy
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has planned to drop his independent presidential bid this week, sources with knowledge of the matter said — adding that he may well go on to endorse former President Donald Trump. The campaign of Kennedy has faced huge trouble in raising funds and securing voter support; therefore, there has been wide speculation regarding the future of his White House bid. He will give a speech in Phoenix on Friday where he said he will outline his "path forward," the same day Trump holds a rally in nearby Glendale, Arizona.
Though nothing is nailed down, Kennedy and Trump have been having conversations via high-level intermediaries. Three people familiar with the matter said plans are in the works for Kennedy to take the stage with Trump on Friday — raising the possibility of an endorsement. They acknowledged that Kennedy, with his history of an independent streak and sometimes unpredictable nature, could still pull the rug out at any moment before he makes up his mind.

Kennedy's possible support for Trump would create a tectonic shift in the presidential race for 2024. Kennedy is a scion of the storied Kennedy family and son of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. He launched his campaign as an independent candidate after breaking away from the Democratic Party. His campaign has been faced with a stream of challenges, particularly in fundraising, and his sunken poll numbers have compelled him to rethink strategy.
His running mate, Nicole Shanahan, broadly hinted Tuesday that they were considering an endorsement of Mr. Trump. Hours later, Trump — who rarely lets a political opening slip by — announced that he would "accept" Mr. Kennedy's support, which further set tongues wagging about an alliance between the two. In a text message on Wednesday, Shanahan said that Kennedy will make a few significant announcements regarding the Democratic Party during his speech in Phoenix. However, she also went on to say, "Nothing is confirmed until Bobby speaks," which kept open the possibility of a last-minute change of heart.
An endorsement for Trump from Kennedy would be huge news in the 2024 election race and might hold some sway over independent voters before November.
